Why Bowl?

Why Bowl?

Few sports have as much to offer as bowling. The concepts of the game and fundamentals are simple to learn and yet extremely challenging to master. It is a sport that appeals to a wide range of people because, unlike many sports, specific physical attributes are not necessary to achieve a high degree of skill. Anyone can learn to bowl and bowl well with proper instruction and a solid work ethic. You don’t need exceptional size or strength to compete in bowling. Champion pro bowlers have ranged in height from the diminutive Donna Adamek, nicknamed “Mighty Mite” to the towering 6’ 7” Steve Cook. Both players are Hall of Famers. What these and all great bowlers have in common is the desire to excel through hard work and determination, and great concentration to focus on the task at hand without being distracted.

Bowling is a fair sport for everyone free from bias and subjectivity found in other sports. What could be more fair than a sport with no referees or judges to decide the outcome. You can’t hardly watch a sport on television without a controversial decision being argued by a player. You will never see a professional bowler argue with a tournament official about their score. It is very simple, either the pins fall down or they don’t. The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of athletics and yet half of the marquee events are sports involving judges. This leaves the outcome of the sport up to the subjective whim of human nature. With bowling everyone has an equal chance.

Youth league bowling is a lot of fun because it combines the skill development of an individual sport with the camaraderie and enthusiasm of a team sport. The unique nature of bowling’s handicap system allows children of all skill levels to compete against one another equally. Effort and attitude are more important than speed and coordination. Some bowlers will naturally develop their skills at a faster pace, but all bowlers will compete equally with no one “sitting on the bench”. And best of all, the big match never gets rained out.
